The first snowfall in Whistler is always time for everyone in town to get a little giddy. It smelled like snow yesterday morning and this morning there was snow on top… and not just a dusting. There was enough snow that it could be measured in centimeters. The twittersphere and blogoshpere went crazy and now everyone has gone from talking about derailers and wheel hubs to edges and wax. Amidst all the snow excitement I have noticed some questions that have been coming up about skiing in Whistler 2010. Here are those questions with some answers:
- Is the ski hill open?
- Yes.
- There will be some sections closed for Olympic events but overall about 90% of the ski hills will be open.
- Typically the Olympics are a great time to go skiing at a resort because all of the beds usually set aside for skiers are being used by media etc.
- Lift lines will be short.
- I have heard there will be a checkpoint on the highway. Is this true?
- Yes.
- A checkpoint along the Sea to Sky Highway will ensure that drivers traveling to Whistler during February have a place to park their car when they arrive in the resort.
- If you do not have parking there are many alternatives to get to Whistler.
- Will there be things to do in Whistler aside from the Olympics?
- Yes. This is going to be one of the most incredible times to every visit Whistler.
- Small lifts lines, Olympic energy and events on every street corner.
- Whistler Live! will offer arts and culture performances every night of the games. There will be live concerts and every night a medals presentation.
- Will Whistler be super crowded?
- We are hoping for many people to visit Whistler during 2010 but most Olympics to date there has been lots of hotel availability during the games and before and after it is usually extremely quiet.
- Whistler is built to accommodate lots of people. If you have a room in Whistler there is room in Whistler.
- Will there be a shuttle service from Vancouver to Whistler?
- Yes.
- Ridebooker, Transportation Whistler, Whistler Connection and a number of other partners have been working hard to develop a transportation alternative between Vancouver and Whistler. Full details will be released on October 15/2009.
- The goal of the service will be cost-effective and convenient transfers to Whistler. Until then have a look around www.ridebooker.com and see if there are any existing alternatives that interest you.
